About us |
“Mitchells isn’t just about the logo and it’s presentation ... it’s about the company’s ethos, it’s values and it’s people all of which are reflected in our name.”
For four generations Mitchells have been farming in the heart of rural Aberdeenshire and the third and fourth generation, who are currently at the helm, are as strongly committed to providing the very best locally produced milk and cream from their very own Mitchell family cows as the founders Elijah and Agnes Mitchell. At Mitchells we pride ourselves on our levels of service and commitment to local produce which is something that sets us apart from our competitors and our attention to customer needs and personal service has resulted in great satisfaction from our customers.

How it all began
This family run business began between the wars in 1928 when Elijah and Agnes Mitchell bought the original Inverurie village shop. Agnes ran the grocery shop and opened up her front room serving teas. Agnes’s oatcakes became legendary and still today the same oatcake recipe is in use in Mitchells’ bakehouse.
Meanwhile, Elijah and his three sons took care of the thriving dairy. Pasteurisation and domestic refrigeration was yet to come, so in those days milk quickly turned sour. Enterprising Elijah thus delivered his milk twice daily with the towns’ folk running to meet his horse and cart to have their pails and jugs filled with creamy Mitchells Milk.
Soon this eident couple set their sights on farms of their own. Mitchells were able to develop and expand their business while maintaining complete control over the entire process from herd management, milking, bottling and finally doorstep delivering. Mitchells could truly lay claim to be in control from “Grass to Glass”.
Mitchells became the first dairy to introduce pasteurised milk to the Garioch area.
By the 1970s the enterprise comprised three dairy units, a retail shop and a restaurant, which became a popular stopping place for loyal and regular customers from far and wide. People made a bee line for the shop to buy Mitchells fresh farm vegetables, cheeses and groceries while the restaurant continued to offer the finest North East fare while Granny’s Oatcakes are still being bought almost before they have time to cool!
Today, we still pride ourselves in producing the freshest local milk and cream from our family herd and with our shop selling some of the very best foods from fellow local producers and our tearoom cooking up the freshest local ingredients, we continue to play a key role in the Garioch community.
